"WHERE ARE WE?" Delegates are seeking answers to the question of the first year of the diocesan synod in Johannisthal.

These days, the first General Assembly of the diocesan synod is taking place in Johannisthal, where delegates from across the diocese have gathered to discuss the future of the Church in the Plzeň diocese.

The first day of the General Assembly of the diocesan synod began with the arrival of delegates to Johannisthal, where they were warmly welcomed by the synod team. The entire day was marked by spiritual focus – participants experienced a retreat with Fr. Jan Kotas, which allowed them to immerse themselves in prayer, gain spiritual inspiration, and prepare for the following days of intense discussion and decision-making.

The first day culminated in an introductory evening, during which delegates learned who they would be sharing their discussions with in small groups over the following days. Facilitators for each group also introduced themselves, responsible for moderating discussions and helping guide debates towards the most constructive conclusions.

Saturday, the second day of the diocesan synod, is characterized by intense debates in small groups, where participants discuss the working document. Each of the approximately eleven-member groups focuses on one of three main topics – Mission, Economy, or Organization. Each paragraph of the document is discussed, and delegates have the opportunity to propose amendments, which will be evaluated by voting at the end, and if approved, incorporated into the document.

The atmosphere in the discussion groups is pleasant and open, with delegates agreeing that they feel comfortable. This environment allows them to concentrate on important topics and express their opinions openly. Delegates, for example, appreciated the transparency of the Plzeň Bishopric in economic matters, which opened all necessary financial information during the preparation of the document. All materials are also available in both printed and electronic formats, making it easier for delegates to access the resources and helping them navigate the text.

Proposals from the groups will be the subject of voting on Monday, the last day of the first General Assembly.
